Lapacho (Brasilian Walnut), or ipe as it is also commonly referred to as, is an unbelievably durable and hard wood species. Lapacho grows in Central and South America. This species is very resistant to decay and termite and dry insect attack. It is almost twice as dense as most woods and up to five times harder. It is so strong, that Lapacho has a class A fire rating, the same level given to concrete and steel. It is dark brown in color, like a mahogany, so not only lasts a long time but has the beauty of a fine interior wood. The heartwood of lapacho ranges from olive brown to near black, though it can have lighter or darker markings that are sharply seperated from the yellower sapwood. If lapacho is allowed to age, color can be brought back to its original shade with the use of a pressure washer. Lapacho has become a very popular and inexpensive alternative to teak. If you are looking for unusual and fascinating color, stability and durability, Lapacho is a wood that you should consider.
